
Christmas celebrates the historical fact of Jesus’ birth.
His life is emphasizing a unique nature as a virgin-born and sinless miracle worker. He fulfilled many prophecies and will return to judge the world.
The central meaning of Christmas is “God with us.” In Christ he is not a distant observer. He entered human history to suffer with us. He offers forgiveness through His sacrificial death and resurrection.
All this is only possible through a unique understanding of God’s unity. Followers of Jesus agree with the Quran where it states the following:
God is One and Christians are not polytheists. God has no partners and Jesus never claimed to be a separate deity alongside God.
The idea that Mary is a god was likely a heretical teaching from a small, obscure sect. It is a view that has always been rejected by the majority of Christians.
Both, Muslims and Christians, also believe that God is beyond comparison and therefore not fully comprehensible by human reason. The Christian view fits that description better. It states that God revealed His oneness in a way that differentiates it from all other faiths. It is a “relational” rather than a mere “mathematical” singularity.
This understanding alone answers problems like:
“Both faiths highlight God’s self-sufficiency and his eternal, selfless love. Such love requires an object. Who was it before the creation?
